In 2018, the government rolled out the Competency Based Curriculum to replace the 8-4-4 system that had been in operation for 32 years. This new curriculum (CBC) came about as a consideration for several things such as Some pupils were skilled and talented at co-curricular activities but a bit slow in grasping academic work. The older 8-4-4 system was majorly centered on academic excellence, and this promoted a lot of unhealthy competition as pupils did all they could to achieve high marks that would determine their school of study in the next level. It was observed that having an exam-only oriented kind of learning did not promote all-roundedness in the children and thus most pupils found it hard to cope with high school life. The junior high school encompasses the years 7, 8 and 9 after completion of the 6 years in primary school.
